Children
Jesus welcomed children in His arms, saying, "Let the children come to me, for to such belongs the Kingdom of God." It is Nativity's privilege to welcome and encourage little children of God to serve Him together with older 'children.' The Bible encourages us to 'train up children in the way they should go, so that, when they are older, they may not depart from it.' The parish considers it a solemn responsibility to help children grow into the likeness of Christ. Though the primary Christian educators of children are their parents, the parish ministry with children offers major support.
Sunday School Program (School of Faithful Followers for Children) The mission of our Sunday School is Learning, loving, and living in the Lord. Children in Pre-school thru Grade 8 begin the 9:30 service in worship with their families, then process to classrooms, returning for Communion. The younger children learn about the people and relationships in the Bible; intermediate children recall and examine those people and relationships in more symbolic and complex ways; older children discuss and explore issues which clarify and encourage the building, defining and practicing of their relationship with God. These approaches are consistent with our belief that Christian faith is nurtured through relationships. Nursery care is provided for toddlers, and a special area adjacent to the 9:30 worship center is available for parents with babies.
Children's Music Programs Two youth choirs provide music at various services. The Spirit Singers Choir is described in the Youth Section of this site. The KidmoSing group for Grade K-4 children ministers monthly at the 9:30 AM Sunday service and meets weekly after receiving Communion at that service. The Spirit Singers for Grade 5-12 youth ministers monthly at the 9:30 service and rehearses on Sunday afternoons.
Acolytes The Acolyte Guild consists of adults and youth (ages 7 and above) who perform various duties at the altar to assist during worship services. The Guild has created an excellent Acolyte Handbook, a copy of which may be obtained by calling the church office. Further information can be obtained by contacting our Priest Associate.
Holy Communion Children are welcome to receive Holy Communion with the consent and instruction of their parents. Parents are encouraged to speak with one of the clergy about this. Also, all children in Grade 2 are encouraged to join the Rector and their parents for three Saturdays in Lent for further instruction about the meaning and significance of this most important Sacrament.
Summer Camping Programs In addition to our Diocesan Camp Bement (click for more information), the parish offers to subsidize one-week stays at a number of regional Christian camps where children and youth encounter our Lord and grow as His faithful followers.
