Job Description

Title:   Youth Minister
Reports to:  Fr. Len Cowan, Rector
Status:  Hourly paid position, 20 hours per week

Summary Responsibilities

The goal of the Minister is to strengthen relationships within the youth, church, and neighboring community, helping all to be and make faithful followers of Jesus Christ. The position focus is on working with a team of youth and adult parishioners to facilitate their ministry with youth in Grades 5-12.

Job Requirements

The Youth Minister:

  1. Is a baptized Christian who prays, worships, and serves regularly in a local church, evidencing the fruit and gifts of the Holy Spirit in a Christ-like way.
  2. Has a passion for youth and for ministry with youth and adults who have a similar passion, including awareness of contemporary youth culture music.
  3. Has experience in church youth ministry and views it as a core part of the life of a parish.
  4. Is able to communicate well with youth and adults, including providing written
  5. materials for parish communications.
  6. Demonstrates assent to the Bible and the historic Creeds as the core elements from which we draw inspiration and guidance.
  7. Will be expected to conduct him or herself in accordance with the teachings of the Bible, the Episcopal Church, and the policies of the Church of the Nativity.

Specific Responsibilities

The Youth Minister will lead a youth ministry team for youth in grades 5-12 by:

  1. Training and developing youth leaders, both youth and adult; and by providing pastoral and spiritual support and education for these leaders and their work
  2. Working with the leaders and providing ideas and inspiration for programming
  3. Providing spiritual support and guidance to the youth
  4. Being present at various youth ministry events and youth group meetings, as arranged with the youth leaders
  5. Developing a discipling program for youth, focusing on a deeper life with God, pursuing the parish, mission, vision, and way of life.
  6. Learning, teaching, and encouraging development of parish way of life models (Small Groups, Bible Study, personal devotions, self-denial, outreach, etc.)
  7. Working with the Youth Choir Director and Children’s and Family Minister to coordinate quarterly gatherings of children, youth and family ministry leaders for scheduling, updating, and vision-casting
  8. Helping develop policies for adults working with youth, and coordinate all youth workers participation in safe church training.
  9. Seeking prayer support for youth, youth ministers, and youth ministry.
  10. Serving as liaison between youth and parish ministries, offering a clear vision for youth ministry to the other leaders of the parish.
  11. Functioning as a member of the Nativity Staff Team, under the supervision of the Rector, working in mutual ministry with and support of other ministers on the staff and in the parish.
  12. Communicating with the Vestry Youth Representative as advocate and liaison for parish youth ministry,
  13. Providing a bi-monthly report of ministry to the Vestry.
  14. Other duties related to youth ministry as assigned.

In its hiring practices, Church of the Nativity will conduct itself in accordance with the teachings of the Bible, the content of the Book of Common Prayer, the Canons of the Episcopal Church, the by-laws of the Diocese of Western Massachusetts, and the policies of the parish.
